Over the years I have acquired a few Phosban reactors. I have used my Phosban reactors for more things than you can shake a pipefish at. I originally purchased mine of course to remove and control phosphates through the use of Phosban or some other brand of GFO material . It work great, and I ran the customary second charge to remove any lingering Silicates as well, the put it away.
Some time later I had been feeding some Reef Gumbo and some stinky stuff and decided to run a carbon to remove the odor, and a slight yellow ting i had notices building up. I went and picked up some activated carbon and mesh bag. When I got home I realized; “What a perfect application for the old Phosban reactor.” Si I filled the reactor with the carbon instead of GFO. 100% up-flow contact through the carbon worked fantastic. I now had 2 great uses for the little reactor cylinder.
Sometime later yet, I used my little reactor, without the black filter rings on the bottom, filled about 1/3 full of Chaeto, added some pods, and used it as a hang on refugium feeding off the stray light from the halides. It also fed pods to my tank as they bred and escaped. Another fun project with the thing. So I now had 3 good uses for it. There are many more uses for this “media” reactor than just Phosban.
If you haven’t tried this or a similar product, they are rather inexpensive for their usefulness and all marine fish tank owners and reef aquarium owners should have one, or one like it. Tip of the day!
